Sneak Peek: Students identify and reflect upon traits that are necessary to being a good and inclusive friend in the unit Amistad e inclusión, while also learning how to establish their own needs as friends and community members.
What’s the best way to make friends? Be a friend! Navigating friendships in middle school and high school isn’t easy. This unit on friendship and inclusion helps students learn important friendship building skills while at the same time improving their Spanish language skills.

Heritage students already have the challenge of navigating what it means to live with a hybrid identity and we want to empower them to get to know themselves better and to strengthen their relationships with their classmates. By putting the focus on their positive character and personality traits, we are setting them up for success in being a good friend themselves, finding friends that will support them, and developing a strong and inclusive community.
This friendship and inclusion unit is a week-long unit from our Linaje curriculum designed for middle school heritage Spanish speakers. It starts with the basics: a lesson on ser vs. estar to set them up with the ability to accurately describe themselves and others, then moves to deeper self-reflection with a reading activity. It culminates with a few artistic and creative projects that lets the students showcase their positive uniqueness. Self-love is also incorporate into this unit, making it a fun one to teach around Valentine’s Day (although you can teach it any time of the year too).
Check it out! Below you’ll find a downloadable resource to serve as a sample of what to expect in the unit. If you love it and want to find the rest of the supporting lessons and materials, join us in the Heritage Spanish Club! You’ll find this unit included in Linaje Year One.

Prep:
For this lesson you’ll need to print out the amor propio flipbook so each student has a template to work from. You’ll also need to print off the poema biográfico PDF, along with the appropriate number of masculine and feminine templates. Alert students to bring colored pencils or markers, and scissors and glue if you do not have classroom sets. You may choose to pre-assign the partners for the poema biográfico activity so no one feels awkward without someone to work with.
Duration:
This lesson is designed for a 57 minute class period, but students may need more time to work on their poem drafts and then final compilations on day two.
Teacher instructions:
- Pass out a copy of the amor propio instructions/template to each student.
- Explain that the purpose of the activity is to help them understand more about themselves and others. Encourage them to be thoughtful in their written responses. This is the type of activity that you get out of it what you put into it. Remind students that this is a chance to get to know themselves and one another better. Depending on your class camaraderie, this might take some easing into. Certain sections may be more open to sharing than others. Hopefully students will not struggle to fill something out, but a few might. They can be pretty hard on themselves at times. The more you can encourage a positive classroom environment the more likely you’ll be to have buy in. You could also lead into this lesson with a warm-up each day the week prior of a self-love journal prompt.
- After students fill out the written portion for each heart, have them carefully cut and then glue each layer of the hearts going from largest to smallest.
- Allow time for students to personalize and add color to the flipbook.
- Finally, have students fill out the information for the poema biográfico. They will work with a classmate as the activity has them writing about their friend.
- Likely tomorrow have students transfer that information to the final poema template (masculine or feminine). Then have the students do a gallery walk to read each other’s poems, or have them read them out loud for the class or in small groups.
