Supplies:

  • 11 x 13 paper
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils

Prep:

  • Upload the a historia de mi vida Project Instructions to your Learning Management System or print off copies (one for each student).

Lesson plan:

  1. Go over a historia de mi vida Project Instructions with your students. Be sure to highlight the student examples so they have an idea of what their end product should look like. They can be creative with how they want to draw their life. Some choose a timeline format, others choose a self-portrait, others organize their life by location, or emphasize people. It’s up to them!
  2. This will take your students 2-3 class periods to complete. Put on some background music and give them time to draw out their life.
  3. Once most students have finished their drawings, spend one class period rotating them through small groups so they can share about their life with their classmates. You can number students off into groups of three and then do that several more times, for fresh audiences. Or you could put students in two lines across from each other “speed dating” style. Set a timer for 3 minutes and have them use their drawings to talk about their life story to the person across from them. Both should have time to share; when the timer goes off, have just one line rotate so that everyone has a new person in front of them.
    1. **You, as the teacher, should join in this sharing process as well! This activity provides a great way to get to know your students on a deeper level.
  4. Collect all the drawings and display them on your classroom walls or in the hallway.

Note: The main purpose of this project is the icebreaker piece where they introduce themselves to their classmates. I collected their drawings and gave them a completion grade for it. I would not worry about grading their drawings beyond just completion. If you want, you could give out some special prizes to the top three drawings.
